Porcelain Veneers

If you have teeth that need a touch-up but you want to avoid crowns and dental implants, porcelain veneers are an option you should consider. Dr. Wells at South Charlotte Family & Dentistry want you to be informed about this popular cosmetic enhancement that will make your pearls shiny and new.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are extremely thin, tooth-colored shells custom-made for your teeth. They cover your front teeth to recreate a perfect, natural set of teeth. Although thinly shaped to naturally fit your teeth, porcelain veneers are strong and sturdy.

“Porcelain veneers do for your smile what replacement siding does for your home.” In other words, just as the exterior of a house takes abuse over the years from wind, rain, hail, dirt, baseballs, rambunctious kids, unruly teenagers, and all manner of forces of nature, so too do the exteriors of our teeth take such abuse over time from food, wine, coffee, imperfect dental hygiene, hockey pucks, overzealous recreational activity, and the inevitable occasional injuries, minor or otherwise, that we all face.

You can do everything Dr. Wells tells you to do to protect and clean your teeth, but for some, our teeth don’t want to comply. This is where porcelain veneers come in to help. Porcelain veneers are perfect for those who want to alter a tooth’s size, color, and shape. Porcelain veneers are more equipped than other veneers to prevent stains and to mirror the aesthetic beauty of natural teeth.

What Specific Issues With My Teeth Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Irregularly shaped teeth
  • Discolored teeth

What Are the Benefits of Porcelain Veneers?

  • Unlike crowns, porcelain veneers allow minimal alteration to the natural tooth.
  • Porcelain veneers are custom-sculpted for your teeth, thus making the veneer almost unnoticeable to the naked eye.
  • Porcelain veneers are perfect for resisting stains caused by drinks, food, and cigarette smoke.
  • Porcelain veneers create a perfect white smile.
  • Porcelain veneers do not require pre-procedure shaping like crowns need.

The Process

The first step if you’re considering porcelain veneers is to consult with Dr. Wells and his knowledgeable staff. Dr. Wells wants to make sure this procedure is what is best for you and your teeth.

The next step is the preparation stage. Porcelain veneers require that an extremely small part of the tooth’s enamel will be removed, about ½ millimeters. An impression of your tooth will be made and sent to a dental laboratory that builds your personal porcelain veneer.

The bonding stage occurs next. The porcelain veneers are placed on your teeth prior to permanent cementing and shaped if needed for that perfect fit. Next, the veneers are applied to your teeth with a special cement. Final step, you walk out of South Charlotte Family & Dentistry’s office with bright new teeth.

What Should I Expect Afterwards?

Beyond the positive comments friends and family will shower you with, you should expect 5-10 years of attractive teeth. You’ll expect no extra care to your veneers beyond the normal care of brushing and flossing.
