What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that removes the infected tooth pulp and sometimes the nerve. Then the area is sealed so that future teeth pain is eliminated. A root canal is the term given to the passages within the tooth between the pulp and the tooth roots. It contains nerves and blood vessels.

Dr. Wells will examine your teeth thoroughly and get an x-ray of the infected area. This will help Dr. Wells perform the root canal. This first step is numbing the area to prevent tooth pain during the dental procedure. Then Dr. Wells will carefully make an opening in the crown of the tooth. He uses special tools to clean out the decayed tooth pulp. Depending on the infection, Dr. Wells will either leave the tooth open or fill it up and seal it. He may not seal it right away in order to continue to drain any infected material from the tooth pulp.

After the root canal is complete and all the infected material has been removed or drained from the area, Dr. Wells will seal the root canal. Using a special composite filling, Dr. Wells fill sup the center of the tooth. A crown or some other tooth restoration is sometimes need to protect the remaining tooth. This helps protect from future tooth pain.
